Poetry invites us into a sacred space. It is an artform that opens the invitation to active, heart-centered experience.
Rather than telling a viewer what they need to think or feel, poetry establishes a kind of communion that invites feeling and flow in a way that straight narration cannot. Engaging the viewer in an artistic experience creates space for exploration, discovery and establishes connection from a deeper place, which is fertile ground for motivating immediate action.
I offer a twist on telling the “hard story.” Receiving a challenging or heavy reality that asks us to reexamine our values can set us adrift and leave us hopeless. A turn of poetic language can adeptly point us toward the foundational shared values that create solidarity around solving an issue or conflict.
The right words call people into community and orient them to a sense of belonging.
Then, offering a simple and immediate collaborative action that we commit to taking together asks people to “join the team,” shift their self-image and step inside the movement of change, right now. Action and solidarity are the antidote to despair. We need to believe that we are working TOGETHER.
